Cheat River Festival

The 17th Annual Cheat River Festival on Saturday May 7 in Preston County, Rt. 26 Albright, West Virginia, not only celebrates the new life that comes with Spring, but it also represents the new life that can be found in the Cheat River watershed.
The festival provides live traditional, folk and bluegrass music, a festival market with specialty vendors, an artist market with quality arts & crafts booths, a food court, a Kids Tent, climbing wall, an educational Focus Tent on the Cheat River watershed, and a Green Tech Area showcasing alternative energies.
In addition to the festival, two races take place. Friday is the famous Cheat River Down River Race. White-water paddlers from surrounding states & beyond travel to this annual race for kayaks and canoes. Saturday is the Cheat Fest 5K. Runners take to the streets of Albright for a scenic race along the Cheat River.
The festival is a celebration of the Cheat River and its improving water quality. Friends of the Cheat formed in 1994 after a deep mine seal blow out and millions of gallons of highly acidic drainage colored Muddy Creek and the Cheat River bright orange, killing fish for miles downstream. Since that time many water restoration projects have been completed on the lower Cheat and water quality has been steadily improving.
Directions to the festival site: From I-68 take exit #23 Bruceton Mills. Go South on Rt. 26 for 10 miles. Festival site is on the right.

CONFERENCE: "Re-Mixed and Re-Mastered: Defining and Distributing the Black Image in the Era of Globalization" / The New School / New York / April 8 - 10, 2011

Re-Mixed-BannerSmall.jpg
From Friday, April 8 through Sunday, April 10, this three-day conference examines the largely overlooked impact that different modes of distribution have on content creation and format of works by and for the African American community. The failures of top-down distribution models and the advent of multi-directional communication continue to alter the evolving landscape of available content and its mediums. Central to the conference is the question of how to continue to create and distribute content that challenges the dominant narrative but that maintains its cultural relevancy.
The Re-Mixed and Re-Mastered (R2) conference brings media makers, industry professionals, students and scholars of media, and film enthusiasts into a dialogue on increasing and diversifying the global distribution opportunities for media makers of color. This conference is intended to foster and strengthen a networked community committed to enhancing the visibility of high quality, independently produced media from around the world. The weekend will include screenings, panels, and workshops with media makers, cultural critics, and scholars from across the globe, as well as major industry decision makers and artists whose work speaks to issues both inside and outside the mainstream. We will present screenings of recently completed works and works-in-progress across formats, case studies, and DIY distribution techniques, including both firsthand information and alternative representations.
Confirmed guest panelists include: Jill Nelson (U.S.), renowned author and former Washington Post journalist; Frances Anne Solomon (Trinidad/Canada) of Caribbean Tales Worldwide Distribution; Ava DuVernay (U.S.), director/filmmaker, I Will Follow;Tambay Obenson (Nigeria/U.S.) of Shadow and Act: On Cinema of the African Diaspora; and Hlonipha Mokoena (South Africa/U.S.), assistant professor of anthropology at Columbia University, among others.

Featured New School faculty members include Sean Jacobs, Michelle Materre,Fabio ParasecoliRafael Parra and Tracyann Williams; participants also include New School alumni working in media, including Jennifer Carr MacArthur and Rucyl Mills.

POST: Thornton Dial / Indianapolis Museum of Art / March 14, 2011

Alex Carrier is a gallery guard at the Indianapolis Museum of Art. She's also working on a master's degree in Museum Studies at IUPUI. This is her touching account of Thornton Dial's recent visit to IMA.
Sharing a Moment, Experiencing a Life: My Day with Mr. Dial
by Alex Carrier
?

?
The first time I learned about Thornton Dial was last fall in my Introduction to Museum Studies course at IUPUI.  As preparatory work for a visit to the IMA, my class watched the documentary Mr. Dial Has Something To Say, which is now continually on view in the Davis Lab.  I highly recommend it!  Knowing all of the work he has accomplished in his life, I was overwhelmed when my boss, Cliff, told me that I was to escort Mr. Dial around the museum the morning that Hard Truths: The Art of Thornton Dial would open.

On Thursday, February 24th, I stood in the the Efroymson Family Entrance Pavilion with butterflies in my stomach.  Let me tell you, the anticipation of meeting a person you know to have such strength of spirit is extremely intimidating.  Then I met Mr. Dial, and though his spirit is just as strong as I thought it would be, his personality was amazingly warm and inviting.

As we moved into Hard Truths, Mr. Dial saw, for the first time, his lifes work exhibited in a way that truly represented the emotion and care that exists in each of his pieces.  He released a sigh, as though he had been holding his breath for twenty years.  It was like friends meeting again after a long separation.

Though I was a silent observer, I was able to share an amazing experience with Mr. Dial both of us seeing, for the first time, the most extensive and complete exhibition of his artwork to date.  You made it so beautiful, Mr. Dial kept saying.  Joanne Cubbs, Adjunct Curator of American Art, would continually reply, You are the one who made it beautiful.  Walking with Mr. Dial was both amazing and humbling, and it made me appreciate his work and skill all the more.

Something that will stay with me is that when he spoke, though his voice was soft, everyone listened.  People didnt just stop talking out of courtesy or because Mr. Dial was the man of the hour, although he was that.  People listened to what he said.  They listened because when Mr. Dial spoke, he said things.  His words, filled with stories and emotions, are windows into his artwork, and his artwork acts as windows into life.  His artworks tell stories that really say things. When you walk into Hard Truths: The Art of Thornton Dial, I hope you take the time to discover his stories for yourself, because each piece really does have something to say.

Albany Greets Spring with 200,000 Tulips

Albany, New York greets spring with over 200,000 tulips blooming in a myriad of colors and varieties to celebrate Albanys rich Dutch heritage.
Its 63rd Annual Tulip Festival on May 7 and 8 in Washington Park provides entertainment on four stages, over 100 crafters, fine arts show, gardening talks, food vendors, and family fun.

The Heritage Weekend on May 14 and 15 at the Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area kicks off the tourist season with special events and discounted admission with a state-wide bang.

From May 3 to 22 there are Albany Vanguard Show House Tours at 10 Stafford Rd, Loudonville, NY. This remarkable historic home is owned and is being completely restored by Nathanial Bette. It was originally commissioned in 1839 and completed in 1841 by William Stafford. He was a merchant, assemblyman and judge. He named his summer home Prospect Place.
Over the years many illustrious Albanians owned the home and a full history will be presented. Mr. Bette has been working with Albanys Designers and Decorative Painters to bring the famous home back to its original Federal beauty with touches of its other historic features and the comfort and beauty of current designs. Like all Grande Dames this house has aged very well and the present day version to be presented in May will be a true work of art. Albany looks forward to showcasing this renovation through the talents of its many and varied interior decorators, designers, and faux finishers. House tours will benefit the Albany Symphony Orchestra.

AUCTION: Aaron Douglas Stenciled Placard / Swann Galleries / SOLD March 13, 2011

Swann Galleries Auction description:

Sale 2239 Lot 141
UNIQUE DOUGLAS STENCIL (ART.) [DOUGLAS, AARON.] THURMAN, WALLACE. Edward A. Blatt Presents "Harlem," a thrilling play of the black belt. Black and white stencil on composite board, 19-7/8 x 13-1/8 inches; some discoloration to the blank margins where originally framed. New York: Apollo Theatre, 1929.
Estimate $7,500-10,000
SOLD FOR $15,000
A beautiful stenciled placard by Aaron Douglas done for the opening of his good friend Wallace Thurman's play, "Harlem," at the Apollo Theatre. Quite likely unique. When the play opened on February 20, 1929, its title had been changed to "Harlem," a play of Negro Life in "New York's Harlem." So this placard, was probably never used. The silhouettes in th is placard are an artistic device frequently used by Aaron Douglas in the 1920s. Similar figures appear in Opportunity Magazine's portfolio of Langston Hughes's poetry (1926) and the dust jackets for several books including James Weldon Johnson's "God's Trombones" (1926) and Claude McKay's "Banjo" (1929)."Harlem" was anything but a success. In fact, it put Thurman, and William Jourdan Rapp, co-producers of the play in debt. Rapp was editor of True Magazine, a lurid publication for which Thurman occasionally wrote under various pseudonyms.

Lilac Festival in Rochester, New York

The Worlds Largest Lilac Collection
One of the nations biggest, oldest and most delightful flower events, the annual Lilac Festival in Rochester, New York, provides 10 days of art, music, food and flora every May.
This community-wide celebration an international springtime party takes place from May 13 to 22 this year, as always at the beautiful 155-acre Highland Park.

The only 10-day free festival of its kind in North America, the festival is inspired by the magnificent lilac collection at Highland Park which plays host to over 500 varieties of lilacs on more than 1,200 bushes. What was first planted in 1892 by horticulturist John Dunbar has turned into the worlds largest lilac collection that even Martha Stewart has enjoyed when she visited the festival in 2007. This event is perfect for all ages and was voted as a top 100 event by the American Bus Association for 2010.

Other than the fragrant backdrop of the lilacs, there is much that makes the festival special 10 days of free entertainment on the festivals main stage including performances by national recording artists and free childrens entertainment during the week and on the weekends.
Daily special events include the new Business Rocks Lilacs on Monday, Lilacs & Bubbles on Tuesday, Farmers Market on Thursday and Medved Lilac 10K & 5K Family Fun Run on Sunday. The 2011 Lilac Parade will bring dozens of marching bands, decorated floats, clowns, childrens choirs, dancers and costumed characters.

For some people who do not know him, must think this teen is one year old toddler. But unexpectedly, Junrey Balawing is 17-year-old teenager who trapped in the body like a toddler.

For adolescent age, adolescent period is the moment when they can socialize without feeling inferior, and spend time on the move. However, different from children her own age, the teenager's body which only has 56 cm height is not experiencing a period of growth since his first birthday. This condition forced him to live in a small body so that he runs hard, and can not even stand in a long time.

These adolescents lived with both orangtuannya and three sister who has a body higher than himself in the interior of the Philippine province of Zamboanga del Norte. He should stay at home with her mother while her sisters, Jaycel (13), Jay (11), and Jeanritch (6) go to school.

"He needs my care every minute, every day. Junrey can only walk if assisted. He was unable to stand for long because it will cause it pain," said Concepcion, the mother of 35-year-old Junrey, as quoted page of The Sun.

Junrey father, Blacksmith dad Reynaldo (37), must work away from home all week. But when he got home, Junrey enjoy sitting on his lap and around the village with him.
