Celebrating Sacramento Valley agricultural history

The 2nd annual California Nut Festival celebrates the rich heritage of Northern Californias nut and agricultural industry with a fun-filled day on April 16 with the very best in locally grown food, wine, brews, and live entertainment.
You can enjoy guest chef cooking demonstrations, and art and farming displays at the Patrick Ranch Museum, 10381 Midway, Chico, CA from 11a.m. to 4p.m. (tickets $25 per person). The Butte Folk Music Society is providing musical entertainment throughout the day. The Festival features the works of local plein air artists on local farms throughout the seasons.
The California Nut Festival began as a series of events including a blossom tour, spelling bee, book club and chef demonstrations that took place over the course of a two week period, but lacked a single event that brought consumers and local farms together in a meaningful way.
The mission of the California Nut Festival is to help consumers connect with local farmers and learn about the locally grown food available in the North Valley, and support the continued development of the Patrick Ranch Museum to preserve and interpret the agricultural history of the Sacramento Valley, including social, cultural and economic aspects.
Attendees have the opportunity to elevate their knowledge of culinary skills and locally grown foods, while also gaining a clearer understanding and appreciation of all that goes into producing the food they eat.
Proceeds from the California Nut Festival benefit the historic Patrick Ranch Museum which was bequeathed to the Chico Museum, the predecessor to the Far West Heritage Association, in 2001.

Sounds of the Mississippi South

Its true: Mississippi is the True South. Its also true that Mississippi is the birthplace of Americas music. Country, blues, rock n roll .... they all started in Mississippi.
From the father of country music, Jimmie Rodgers, and the king of rock n roll, Elvis Presley, to the originators of blues like Son House, Robert Johnson and B.B. King, Mississippi is home to the ones who started it all, said Mary Beth Wilkerson, director of the Mississippi Development Authoritys Tourism Division. Come to Mississippi in May and experience our authentic musical heritage as we celebrate some of the finest musicians, festivals and venues in the world.
The Mississippi Blues Trail continues its incredible journey of bringing to life the history of blues music all across the state. Blues Trail markers have been placed at sites where blues musicians lived and entertained. Others are situated at historic streets, train depots, blues clubs, cemeteries and even churches where blues musicians made their mark.
This month May 8 to be exact marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of one of the most famous bluesmen of all time, Robert Johnson. His life and legend have served as inspiration for musicians and storytellers around the world.
Several Robert Johnson 100th anniversary events are scheduled this year including the Official Centennial Concert from May 5 to 8 in Greenwood with free concerts and more to commemorate this historic year and musician.
No musical journey to Mississippi is complete without a visit to the Elvis Presley Birthplace in Tupelo and true fans of Elvis will want to be sure to attend the Elvis Festival in Tupelo during June 2 to 5 this year.

Cheat River Festival

The 17th Annual Cheat River Festival on Saturday May 7 in Preston County, Rt. 26 Albright, West Virginia, not only celebrates the new life that comes with Spring, but it also represents the new life that can be found in the Cheat River watershed.
The festival provides live traditional, folk and bluegrass music, a festival market with specialty vendors, an artist market with quality arts & crafts booths, a food court, a Kids Tent, climbing wall, an educational Focus Tent on the Cheat River watershed, and a Green Tech Area showcasing alternative energies.

White-water paddlers from surrounding states & beyond travel to this annual race for kayaks and canoes. Saturday is the Cheat Fest 5K. Runners take to the streets of Albright for a scenic race along the Cheat River.
The festival is a celebration of the Cheat River and its improving water quality. Friends of the Cheat formed in 1994 after a deep mine seal blow out and millions of gallons of highly acidic drainage colored Muddy Creek and the Cheat River bright orange, killing fish for miles downstream. Since that time many water restoration projects have been completed on the lower Cheat and water quality has been steadily improving.
Directions to the festival site: From I-68 take exit #23 Bruceton Mills. Go South on Rt. 26 for 10 miles. Festival site is on the right.

Conch Republic Celebrates Secession

With activities ranging from a drag race for female impersonators to a lighthearted sea battle featuring tall ships, the Conch Republics 10-day birthday party is set to take place Friday, April 22, through Sunday, May 1.
Meanwhile, on Sunday, April 24, divers and snorkelers visiting the Florida Keys can plunge into an underwater game of hide and seek during the 11th annual Underwater Easter Egg Hunt in the warm, clear waters off Key Largo.
Showcasing the republics eccentric spirit, the 29th annual Conch Republic Independence Celebration commemorates the Florida Keys secession from the United States following a 1982 U.S. Border Patrol blockade that virtually stopped traffic on the only road to the mainland.
In protest, local officials staged the secession. After proclaiming the Conch Republic, they declared war on the mother country, pelted federal agents with stale Cuban bread, surrendered after 60 seconds and demanded $1 billion in foreign aid.
Today patriots throughout the Keys fly the royal blue flag of the republic, whose motto is We Seceded Where Others Failed, and celebrate the secessions anniversary each year with a lively island-wide party.
As well as the drag race and sea battle for sea dogs and wenches, festival highlights include the Conch Republic Red Ribbon Bed Race, a charity race of decorated beds down Duval Street.
The schedule also includes a pirates ball and pig roast, fiddlers contest and jam of bluegrass and old-time music, Conch Crawl showcasing favorite watering holes, Conch Republic military reception aboard the World War II museum ship Mohawk and sailing race commemorating the Keys historic shipwreck salvage tradition

Fast Paced Military Tattoo

The largest military music show in Vegas the Las Vegas International Tattoo is a fun packed, fast-paced  patriotic show featuring some of the worlds best armed forces bands in a tribute to the American armed forces and allies.
The Tattoo, with a spectacular line-up of 500 musicians and dancers, will be hosted at the Thomas and Mack Center, on Friday April 15 and on Saturday April 16, both at 7.30pm. The United States Army, Marine Corps, Navy and Air Force will join forces with military and police units from Scotland and Canada.
The Tattoo is the signature event of the Las Vegas International Celtic Festival. The festival events include the Las Vegas Celtic Gathering and Highland Games, which is organized by the Las Vegas Celtic Society. Visiting Las Vegas at this time is a great opportunity to experience two fantastic events. There will be two performances daily by the American rock band The Young Dubliners (sometimes shortened to the Young Dubs).
The original meaning of military 'tattoo' was a drum performance dating back from the 17th Century when the British Army was stationed in Belgium and the Netherlands. Drummers from the garrison would be sent out to towns to signal to soldiers, 'last orders', get back to barracks! The duty was known as doe den tap toe ("turn off the tap"), as an instruction in old-dutch for innkeepers to stop serving beer. Over time this ceremony has become a much bigger spectacle involving military and civilian assets, choreographed into complete theatrical presentations. This event will uniquely blend music ceremony, entertainment and theatre.
